About This Episode:

In this episode of “#WalkWithMe” I offer three simple questions that can shift our perspective from looking backwards to facing forward, while helping us learn, grow and have faith in any situation.

When you’re driving your car, do you spend your time looking out the front windshield or in the rearview mirror? Now, more than ever before, we need to be focused on what’s ahead of us.

I feel like there’s much energy today being put into how we can get back to what once was. “When things get back to normal” is a phrase I’m constantly hearing. But, that’s all past tense. Wakeup call: I don’t think we’re ever going back to what once was. Another wakeup call: Why would we want the future to be the same as the past? It removes the hope that things can be better than they ever were.

A lot of us spend much time in the rearview mirror, looking at things through regret or guilt. This can hijack our emotions, get us stuck in the past, increase self-doubt and eventually slip into depression.

How do we look backwards with the right perspective to shift to becoming more future focused? Here are three simple questions that provide a helpful framework for not just getting through challenging circumstances but becoming better because of them.

#1 – What did I learn?

We all make mistakes; the worst thing is not making the mistakes but not learning from them. Be a perpetual student.

#2 – How did this make me better?

I challenge you to see how any circumstance, even the most negative, can make you better. We don’t learn as much when we win as we do when we fail. Maybe it taught you how to overcome. Maybe you met somebody who adds value in your life. Grow from this.

#3 – What else could that mean?

A lot of times we assume a negative intent. See it as a positive intent instead. Maybe you were meant to take that path or stop that path. Maybe it means you were meant to go through it so you can help others through it. Have faith

Then ask these questions going forward…1) What will I learn? 2) How will I become better? 3) What will all this mean?

The answers to those questions will help you learn, grow and have faith in challenging situations and lead you to the right outcomes. It all depends on the perspective you choose to take and the actions that follow that belief.

So, let’s stop looking in the past and instead push ourselves into the future.
